The band is made from elasticated cork to insulate the hand from the heat of the beverage inside. The lid is made from plastic mixed with wheat straw. Wheat straw is the stalk left over after wheat grains are harvested. Traditionally it has been treated as waste, but now it can be used in combination with traditional plastic. This reduces the quantity of plastic needed to produce an item and accelerates its biodegradability once it is eventually disposed of.

The Kooshty Kork Kup is made from borosilicate glass, which can withstand high temperatures. It has a food grade splash-proof silicone drinking lid, and a cork band which keeps that heat from your hand.
Cork is a completely natural, recurring and easily renewable material. It can be harvested without harming the tree, and grows back periodically every few years. Only about 50% of the bark is removed at the time of harvesting. It is also biodegradable, and will break down into the environment at the end of its life cycle.
